Always a fan of basketball at a very young age, Coach Moore’s basketball journey officially started at the local Richardson, Texas YMCA. The team name? Of course the Mavericks! This first step created a hunger to continue learning and developing which lead to trying out and being accepted on his first 5th Grade AAU Team, Run & Shoot. This step was a leap into the great unknown. That unknown being the competitive world of year round select basketball in the Dallas / Ft. Worth Metroplex. Run & Shoot’s Head Coach was a former Texas A&M Point Guard who’s hard knocks coaching style was the foundation for a dedicated work ethic to get better. The journey continued with each year getting more competitive and the lessons learned growing. Richardson West Junior High was the official journey into the school basketball world of being a student athlete. Coach Moore continued his year round development in the off season, now with his Coppell Mavericks AAU Team under the tutelage of former NFL player Reggie Waddell and Illinois State Missouri Valley standout Kyle Cartmill. Team sponsor Thomas Whitaker, and his outstanding coaching staff, provided great life lessons that still resonate with Coach Moore to this day.
Richardson High School, Richardson, Texas, just North of Downtown Dallas, competed against some of the top high school boys basketball teams in the state of Texas. Coach Moore played all four years of high school basketball at Richardson High School. Throughout his high school career Coach Moore rotated in primarily the point guard, shooting guard and small forward (swingman) positions. Although, Coach Moore’s length, athleticism, shooting ability and most of all coachability made him a versatile player for his coaching staff. Coach Moore was Team Co-Captain, All-Conference, Academic All-District at Richardson High School and was the first recipient of the Eagle Basketball Joe Longino Leadership Award for 2013-2014. Coach Moore was part of the 2012-2013 resurgence of success of Richardson High School Basketball with a run at the McDonald’s Texas Invitational in Houston, Texas, as well as a Texas Boys State Basketball Playoff berth. Richardson’s previous playoff appearance was 1987. Coach Moore played for former North Texas standout Lee Green’s AAU program Lee Green Basketball during his junior and senior AAU seasons in preparation for his college career. Coach Moore’s Team competed in national powers house tournaments such as the PBR Super 64 Nationals, Great American Shootout and the Las Vegas Classic, as well as additional top level Premiere and Prime Time tournaments. The Dallas Ft. Worth Area produces many top national collegiate prospects and NBA level players and continues to be hot bed for high school boys basketball.
Coach Moore received interest from collegiate basketball programs at various levels (JC, NAIA, DII, DIII, DI), but chose to the Walk On path at the University of Arkansas. Coach Moore was the only Freshman Walk On, and gave best effort following a severe ankle injury during a pickup game earlier in the year. Coach Moore did not get the invitation to join the Arkansas Men’s Basketball Program. This could have been the end of the basketball journey, but Coach Moore stayed in contact with a DIII Coach at Whittier College. Coach Mark Jensen was instrumental in persuading Coach Moore to come to sunny Southern California and continue his basketball journey. Coach Moore committed to Whittier College and continued his basketball career at the collegiate level through the 2015-2016, 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 seasons. Whittier College is part of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC). During his collegiate career Coach Moore experienced memories such as a preseason game against the powerhouse Running Rebels of the University of Nevada Las Vegas at the Thomas & Mack Center. Coach Moore also competed in Australia as part of Whittier’s 2017 Summer International Tour with victories over the Australian College of Basketball, the University of Sydney and the Cairns Taipans Development Team who are part of the Cairns Marlins of the Queensland Basketball League (QBL). Upon graduation from Whittier College with a Biology Degree, Minor in Kinesiology, Coach Moore was invited to join the SCIAC All-Stars in a European Exhibition Tour. The SCIAC All-Stars competed in Prague, Bratislava and Budapest.
Coach Moore’s journey faced adversity as many athletes experience. It is through these challenges that character is developed and valuable lessons are learned. It is easy to be positive when things are good. It’s the challenging times that provide the greatest life lessons. Upon graduation and completing the SCAIC All-Star Tour, Coach Moore came to Albuquerque, New Mexico to further his basketball experiences through coaching. Coach Moore’s goal is to share those experiences from elementary player to collegiate player (good and bad) with any athlete that is willing to listen and learn. Coach Moore has recently accepted a position as part of the coaching staff at the Menaul School and has started his own basketball program for skill development and life development. Through his success and failures, Coach Moore’s passion is to help others succeed in life through lessons learned as an athlete.
