About
Gladiators … We Salute You!
How it all started …
For the gladiators of ancient Rome, the arena was their world. This was a world of adversity and struggle. Some gladiators were volunteers. Most were left with no choice but to meet their fate how they chose. Flamma is one of the most famous Roman gladiators in history. Flamma is the Latin word for “flame” and was his battle name. He was captured soldier thrown into battle in the arena to meet a quick death. However, he survived this encounter and battled for 13 years against many enemies in the Coliseum.
A wooden sword called a “rudis” was sometimes awarded to a gladiator along with his freedom from the life of adversity and certain death. Flamma was awarded the rudis on four different occasions. On each occasion, Flamma refused his freedom and chose to continue his life as a warrior. Flamma’s story teaches that we cannot always choose our circumstances. However we can choose how we deal with the adversity and challenges of our circumstances.
The key is to develop skills that support growth of mind, body and spirit. This growth will help the athlete overcome the adversities encountered in life. Flamma Basketball players will train to be warriors and the basketball court will be our arena. The lessons learned on the court should translate to life lessons off the court. The spirit to fight against all odds, the effort to train and prepare, respect for your opponent, honor for self and the team … these are the attributes of both a successful athlete and human.
What is the goal?
Flamma Basketball was founded in 2018 to develop players who embody the essentials of a great athlete. What are these essentials? They are the foundations of being coachable, being a good teammate, having a good attitude, understanding effort drives success, being mentally tough and most of all good sportsmanship. These essentials taught on the court will also develop a great individual off the court.
What does it mean to win? To win is to be victorious. Flamma basketball defines victory as the conquering of ego. Ego is self and to conquer self is true victory. Winning is not winning at all cost. Can you raise your hand when asked, “Who did the best they could and gave all they could give?” The more we can raise our hand, the more victorious we will be. This is winning. This is Flamma Basketball.
